In the past year I have become increasingly aware of how I feel the challenges and fulfillments of plein air painting are so similar to those in daily life; deeply defining who one is. In both one is bombarded with stimulation and choices. How one lives and does this type of painting requires discipline to choose and maintain focus. This process continually affirms the uniqueness of the individual.
The way I approach a painting is to spend a long time looking to find a view that captivates me; such, that I cannot look away. It may take hours. It is the beginning of a relationship with a place.
The excitement of starting the painting is intense. I am overwhelmed by color, light and possibilities for compositions. I begin drawing by doing a brief sketch with graphite or charcoal. Next, I do a monochromatic underpainting prior to introducing color.
Although initially, all is unfamiliar, with repeat visits to paint on location, layers of visual understanding emerge. I experience a melding of vision with the spirit of a place. I may introduce people, buildings or animals into the work. I complete most of my paintings on location, where I can use all that is around me for inspiration and reference. I will finish the painting in my studio over a period of days or longer.
Once a location inspires me, I will return to paint at various times of day and in all seasons. A strong bond forms where a piece of me resides. My paintings are intimate reflections of places that become part of my life as a painter. I invite the viewer to experience these places in my paintings.
I had the privilege of studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Louis Sloan who I considered to be my mentor in landscape painting. The importance of truly seeing and understanding nature was the greatest lesson he imparted.
